In 2012 The Institute of Biomedical Science is celebrating its centenary. As the oldest laboratory medicine professional body we are having a year of celebrations to mark this milestone and to honour and highlight the work of our profession.
The celebrations started on December 1st, 2011 with the inauguration of the Institute's new President, Derek Bishop. Derek currently sits on the Scottish Forum for Health Care Science representing the Institute. He is also a member of the Scottish Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee, a Chartered Scientist, and has worked as a biomedical scientist in Glasgow, Lothian and Tayside for over 30 years. On becoming the Institute's new President Derek said he is "excited to take on the Presidency at a time when the Institute is looking to extend its international reach. The Institute plays an important role in setting professional standards for people working within biomedical science and I am honoured to carry this work forward into the centenary year."
IBMS Centenary in Liverpool: a report by David Petts
Alongside the inauguration was the launch of a book that documents the Institute's history. Written by Dr David Petts and Tony Harding, Letters of Consequence: A History of the Institute of Biomedical Science describes the Institute’s humble beginnings and how it evolved into an international organisation with over 20,000 members. Kenny Rae, the Institute's outgoing President, has described the book as a "wonderful achievement that shows, in a changing profession, the remarkable endurance our members continue to show to this day".
"It certainly stirred up a lot of memories and even though I have been in Canada for forty years, I still have a close connection with the Institute. I feel I have to congratulate our people on the amazing work."

To mark the centenary of the Institute of Biomedical Science we are calling on members to nominate past and present members of the Institute for our roll call of notable members from the last 100 years. We would like to hear about members who you feel have made a notable contribution to Biomedical Science, the Institute or who have inspired you personally.
We plan to publish an online list of nominees later in the year.
To nominate a member please visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9P5J5VB
You can also contact Sarah Holman on SarahHolman@ibms.org or on 0207 713 0214 ext 123.
Over the course of the year there will be further events across the four nations to mark the centenary, including a Symposium in Northern Ireland. The Institute is also delighted to be hosting the annual meeting for the European Association for Professions in Biomedical Science.
Back in 1912 the Institute's founders could scarcely have imagined what would evolve over the next hundred years: an organisation at the forefront of developing education and professional support consisting of over 20,000 members made up of men, women and students in the UK and overseas.
Do keep an eye on our website and our journal The Biomedical Scientist as we’ll publish details of more events and activities as they are confirmed. These events will not only allow you to take part in celebrating the Institute’s centenary, but will also provide a great way to make new contacts and also meet up with colleagues and friends.
We hope you enjoy getting involved in the centenary as much as we intend to enjoy celebrating it.
