Reports on Council meetings are available in the members' area.
Council is the Institute's governing body made up of national and regional representatives elected by Associate and Fellow (corporate) IBMS members.
Council's elected status gives it the authority to make key decisions and develop policy on behalf of the biomedical science profession. Every year members have a chance to nominate candidates and elect a colleague to Council.
News of forthcoming elections is always published in The Biomedical Scientist and corporate members should automatically receive ballot papers.
Council represents members and their regions. They are available for members to contact directly or through the IBMS office. Contact details are available in the IBMS diary or by emailing mail@ibms.org.
Council is also responsible for appointing four standing committees who in turn are responsible for various sub-committees, science advisory panels and 'one issue' working groups.
The four standing committees are:
Education and Development Committee (EDC)
The EDC is responsible for the strategic development of Institute academic education and training, clinical laboratory training policies, HPC registration issues and policy development for workforce planning issues. It also promotes and develops the Institute's scheme for continuing professional development. Contact: education@ibms.org
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee looks after the issues and interests of the Institute’s membership. It also develops marketing and publicity activities, career information, website matters, non-technical leaflets, subscription schemes, IBMS statistics and conferences. Contact: mc@ibms.org
Operational Committee
The Operation Committee is formed of representatives from the other three standing committees and deals with overall policy, special interests, finance and political matters.
Contact: mail@ibms.org
Professional Examinations and Awards Committee (PEAC)
PEAC is responsible for the Institute's professional qualifications and exams, research grants, prizes and awards. It is also the reporting committee to the College of Biomedical Science. Contact: qualifications@ibms.org
Other committees include the Congress Committee, the CPD Unit, the Website Committee and the Editorial Development Committee (for the The Biomedical Scientist).
