How to join

Standard routes

Most new members will join either while studying, which case they apply for Associate membership, or after graduation and registration, in which case they will apply for Licentiate.

Each class of membership has its own criteria but it is important to note that Member class requires applicants to have a minimum two years professional experience as a Licentiate while Fellow requires applicants to have a minimum of three years professional experience as a Member.

You need to complete and return an application form to the IBMS with any necessary extra information.

Please read the frequently asked questions page or the application form notes carefully to avoid any delays in processing your application.

If you have queries on joining the Institute please contact us on + 44 (0)20 7713 0214 or mail@ibms.org.

Extra information on the application process and details of membership class offers

This describes how prospective members may be considered for admittance to membership either with or without a Certificate of Competence and how they may be offered the opportunity to join to different classes of membership other than Licentiate or Associate.

Equivalence and non-standard routes to membership

The IBMS has developed membership class equivalence and non-standard routes for laboratory-based practitioners of biomedical science who for a variety of reasons are not able to apply for Institute membership via standard routes.

This is to incorporate maximum flexibility within the Institute's membership structure and ensure that biomedical scientists have opportunities to benefit from membership of the Institute. It should be noted that while this gives potential members equal opportunities to join the Institute this does not over-ride the requirements to complete two years as Licentiate or three years as Member.
