Information for overseas applicants

IBMS has members from all over the world and in turn the work of Institute is globally recognised.

The IBMS has links with European biomedical science organisations and accredits university courses in countries such as Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, Ireland and Sri Lanka. Members around the world also help accredit lectures and events for the Continuing Professional Development scheme.

Overseas members are entitled to many of the same membership benefits as UK based biomedical scientists.

Joining the IBMS

There are four classes of membership for individuals: Associate, Licentiate, Member and Fellow. Full information on joining the IBMS is available in the How to join section. Overseas applicants must note the following extra information.

• Applicants who have not attended an IBMS accredited course must have their overseas qualifications verified by UK NARIC.
• A letter from UK NARIC confirming equivalent certification of non-UK academic qualifications must be sent in with an IBMS application form, copies of qualification certificates and subscription rates.
• If you are attending an IBMS overseas accredited course you may be entitled to Free Student membership.

Studying and Working in the UK

Applications for admission to courses must be made to the higher education universities and not the IBMS.

Job vacancies are advertised in the Biomedical Scientist or on the IBMS affiliated website at www.careerscene.com. Please note that the IBMS cannot help find employment for any members, including overseas members.

Information on working and studying in the UK can be obtained from British Council offices, consulates and embassies abroad.

The Medical Information Officer, The British Council. Medlock Street, Manchester, M15 4PR can advise on British educational establishments and courses, including short courses for qualified professionals.

Registration

Anyone who wishes to be employed in a pathology or biomedical laboratory in or serving the NHS must be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC). To be eligible for registration, you must have degree acceptable to the HPC, successfully complete one or two years training in an approved laboratory, complete the relevant training record and pass the relevant examination. Sometimes the necessary in-service experience is incorporated in the degree course.
