IBMS Hong Kong report 2011

In 2011 we organised four scientific seminars:

  • The Annual Scientific Seminar at the 2010 AGM on ‘Testing for thrombotic
thrombocytopenic purpura: recent advances and challenges’ by Dr. Edmond Ma,
Director of Clinical & Molecular Pathology, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, on 28th October 2010 at the Novotel Century Hong Kong.
  • A seminar on 'Respiratory virus infection: an update' by Dr. Bone Tang, Clinical
Microbiologist, Kong Sanatorium & Hospital on 24th February 2011 at the Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong.
  • A seminar on 'Hair analysis for drugs of abuse’ by Dr. C.S. Ho, Scientific Officer
(Medical), Prince of Wales Hospital on 11th April 2011 at the Federation of Medical
    Societies of Hong Kong
  • A seminar on 'Diagnosing red cell membrane defect with flow cytometry' by Dr.
Michael Wong, Associate Consultant, Prince of Wales Hospital on 3 June 2011 at the Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong

In November 2010, I, as Chairman of the IBMS Hong Kong Branch, was invited to give two scientific talks at the Gibraltar conference on biomedical science. The conference was a success and we were lucky to have participated in it as it represented a good step to go out of Hong Kong and joined other IBMS branch activities. My talks were on ‘The healthcare system in Hong Kong’ and ‘Recent trends in prenatal diagnosis in Hong Kong’.

Over the last year, we have been liaising with other medical laboratory organizations such as IBMS UK, HKIMLS, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and SPACE of University of Hong Kong for exploring joint opportunities for collaborations and activities.
