IBMS London
IBMS London Region serves as a channel of communication between IBMS Council, the Institute office and its local members. The region and branch network has an important role to play in supporting local biomedical scientists, promoting the profession, implementing policy, building up local networks and organising meetings.
IBMS London annual report 2011
2011 was a busy year for London region, the highlight being the new Chief Executive of the IBMS Jill Rodney speaking to the AGM on how she saw the IBMS moving ahead in its centenary year. The AGM provided an opportunity for new and old members of the institute to meet up and share their experience, with 50 year medal winners and newly qualified biomedical scientists in attendance.
The low point of the year was the sad passing of a long-standing IBMS member, John Mercer the IBMS librarian. Tribute was also paid at the meeting to Tom Lansley who died in late 2010.
The Cellular Pathology Discussion Group held four meetings including its successful 'issues with tissues' meeting and a meeting entitled 'How to survive trauma from ancient times to present day'.
The Virology Group held several meetings with topics on gonococcul infections, chicken pox and rabies while the summer symposium included a Jack the Ripper tour. The Virology Update course in now in its 20th year.
The Bacteriology Discussion Group has been set up and the Blood Sciences Group is in the process of being set up, eager volunteers are requested for both.
The region organised a well attended meeting on parasitology delivered by Dr Sally Culter from the committee.
There is a new chair and secretary in post and several new members have joined the committee to replace those that have resigned/retired or left to have children.
The finical crisis is impacting on the ability for diagnostic firms to sponsor events which has impacted on the frequency and scope of meeting held and has been taken into account for our event planning for 2012. Events planned that have been planned for 2012 include:
- sponsorship event for a trainee to attend IBMS conference 2013
- 2012 Virology Symposium to be held in Glasgow with the main theme papilloma virus
- and participation in the Lord Mayors show in November, please come and wave.
