IBMS advisory panels

The IBMS advisory panels provide pools of scientific and professional expertise, knowledge and advice to guide the IBMS in determining policy, developing publications and advising government or the media.

The members of panels are recognised for their experience and expertise, which is used to further the good of biomedical science and the work of the Institute. The panels also provide expert advice for members on request.

In 2009 all the panels worked on the following common agenda:

  • organising the science lecture programmes for the Biomedical Science Congress 2009
  • identifying nominees for Institute representation on external local, national or government committees
  • providing discipline specific input into applications for the Institute’s research grants
  • recommending new CPA assessors for training
  • working with the Institute's examiners to develop examinations for the Institute's
  • professional qualifications, especially the Higher Specialist Diploma
  • providing assessors for Institute registration and qualification portfolios
  • working with the Institute's examiners to set journal-based learning, structured reading and other CPD activities
  • developing qualifications to validate specialist, expert, extended and consultant equivalent roles
  • updating study guides and reading lists for the Institute’s professional qualifications
  • reviewing examination papers with regard to discipline specific content
  • developing and assessing specialist diploma portfolios
  • responding to requests for advice from members
  • commenting on external documents and publications
  • Oxford University Press book series on biomedical science.
