How to join

Standard routes

Many new members will join either while studying, which case they may apply for Associate membership, or following graduation and registration, in which case they may apply for Licentiate.

Each class of membership has its own criteria but it is important to note that Member class requires applicants to have a minimum two years professional experience as a Licentiate while Fellow requires applicants to have a minimum of three years professional experience as a Member.

You need to complete and return an application form to the IBMS with any necessary extra information.

Non-standard routes to membership

The IBMS has developed non-standard routes for practitioners of biomedical science who for a variety of reasons are not able to apply for Institute membership via standard routes.

This is to incorporate maximum flexibility within the Institute's membership structure and ensure that all individuals who work in biomedical science have opportunities to benefit from membership of the Institute. Further guidance on non-standard routes
