As you might be aware, the IBMS has successfully registered over 3,000 members as Chartered Scientists (CSci) on behalf of the Science Council. Following this, the Institute has applied to the Science Council to become one of the licenced professional bodies that will offer registration for Registered Scientist Technicians (RSciTech) and Registered Scientists (RSci).

The Science Council has launched two new professional registers – the Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) and the Registered Scientist (RSci). The introduction of the RSciTech and Rsci registers, in addition to the established Chartered Scientist award, will create a framework of professional registration across the science workforce.

Last month two IBMS staff visited Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH). They were shown around the laboratory facilities and had diagnostic processes explained to them by IBMS members working at the hospital, which gave valuable insight into our member’s day to day working lives.

The Academy for Healthcare Science has achieved major milestones since it's inception in 2011. Over the course of the year, the AHCS has set up a Company Linited by Guarantee and a substantive governance structure, which will be adopted this year. Several attempts have been made to chart the history of the development of the Institute over the past century, the most recent being Dr Derek Farr’s book Learn, that you may improve, published in the early 1980s. Now, a new history, Letters of Consequence: A History of the Institute of Biomedical Science, has been written by David Petts and Tony Harding, which will be published in time for the centenary celebrations.
