IBMS North East region celebrates the Institute’s centenary by taking a trip back in time to 1912

IBMS members from across the North East came together to for an evening of scientific and cultural discovery at the Beamish Open Air Museum, County Durham. After taking the museum’s Edwardian tram down to the cobbled streets of The Town, IBMS members were treated to a sweet making demonstration at Jubilee Confectionary and sampled some old fashioned hospitality at the Sun Inn.

The Town's Masonic Hall provided a splendid setting for local Paediatric Cardiologist and Transplant Physician, Dr Richard Kirk, to give a presentation on the history of transplantation. IBMS member George Hedley was presented with the Institute’s 50 year medal at a ceremony following Dr Kirk’s presentation. The Chief Executive of the IBMS, Jill Rodney, presented George with his medal, commemorating his contribution to the Institute over the last fifty years.

The celebrations continued with a buffet dinner in the Dainty Dinah Tea Rooms. Members were presented with certificates printed on the museum’s press and took in the sights of the Town until it was time to board the last tram home. Dressed for the occasion, of the IBMS North East region, Clinton Blackburn, said "It was great to see so many friends and colleagues together to celebrate our profession’s great achievement".
