Centenary celebrations well underway on the Isle of Man

To celebrate the IBMS' centenary and to mark National Pathology Year biomedical scientists from the Isle of Man branch have organised a series of open days and events at Noble's Hospital.

IBMS members have worked on producing a total of nine displays, which represent individual disciplines within Pathology, for the display area in the hospital foyer. These displays form part of a programme of exhibitions and open days which aim to demonstrate the role of Pathology, Biomedical Scientists and support staff within the healthcare environment to the rest of the staff at Noble's Hospital and the public. Members also gave away promotional items and handed out information sheets to visitors.

The blood transfusion display doubled as a drive to increase donation. The number made from balloons in the photo below gave the telephone number for anyone seeking further information on blood donation or wanting to become a blood donor themselves.

Paul Woods, Chief Biomedical Scientist for Haematology at Noble's Hospital, is pleased with the popularity of the displays and the efforts made by all of the disciplines in the Pathology department. Paul said that "To date they have been well received with positive feedback and comments, it even has created some friendly rivalry between disciplines.", adding that haematology had been busy "making models of the various white blood cells for their display".

The individual disciplines within the Pathology department are also hosting a series of Open Days for health care professionals, the general public and children. These have been planned to take place on evenings, weekends or daytime to enable the greatest possible access for everyone. A booking system in place and the Open Days will be advertised in the local press. The Open Days provide a fantastic opportunity for the public and other healthcare professionals to find out what goes on behind the scenes in a busy Pathology department.

The Isle of Man branch are also planning to host an IBMS Centenary barbecue this summer (weather permitting!).
