One of the most important roles of the Institute as a professional body is the development of biomedical science and maintenance of professional standards of practice for patient care and safety.
The Institute awards training status to laboratories, subsequent to conformity with the IBMS Clinical Laboratory Standards.
UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations (SMIs) are a comprehensive referenced collection of NICE accredited algorithms and procedures for clinical microbiology. SMIs are primarily intended as a general resource for practicing professionals in microbiology laboratories in the UK and assist with the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases.
