Institute of Biomedical Science marks centenary at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine on Friday 6 January 2012
The Merseyside Branch of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) is marking the Institute’s centenary with an event at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine on Friday 6 January. The event is taking place at the School, as the first meeting of the Pathological and Bacteriological Laboratory Assistants' Association (which later on became the Institute of Biomedical Science) took place there on 6 January 1912.
A number of local members, the President of the Institute and the CEO will gather to see a celebratory wreath laid in front of a plaque to commemorate the occasion. This will be followed by a historical tour.
Dave Eccleston, Senior Chief Biomedical Scientist, Aintree Hospital and Chair of the IBMS’s Merseyside branch said: "The Merseyside Branch is delighted to have organised this special event, marking what is an important milestone for the Institute. The decision to start a professional body to promote the role of biomedical science was a bold one for our founders. The Institute today is still carrying out the vision of those that started the organisation – to enhance the profession. The Institute provides training, qualifications and professional standards, helping members to deliver great service to their patients."
The 100 year-old professional body represents 20,000 biomedical scientists from across the UK and beyond. Many members work in the NHS, and play a vital role in diagnosing illness and diseases.
