Non-standard route to Licentiate

Non-standard route to the class of Licentiate

The standard route to Licentiate membership is the Institute’s Certificate of Competence that follows the award of an accredited honours degree and completion of appropriate training.

Prior to application prospective Licentiate members using the non-standard route below must submit details of their appropriate qualifications, together with module descriptors and a copy of any relevant certificates. These will be assessed individually against the content of an accredited honours degree in biomedical science.

Once a qualification has been approved, the following process is for those applicants who do not have full HPC registration, but have an honours degree (verified by UK NARIC if study was not undertaken at a UK Higher Education Institute) in a subject related to biomedical science. Having already met the Institute’s threshold academic standard, it only remains to satisfy the Institute that the current scope of practice is also in biomedical science.

Prospective Licentiate members who possess as a minimum, an honours degree in a subject related to biomedical science, but do not have full HPC registration are asked to prepare the following:

  • A self-written, personal profile that outlines their scope of practice, which must be at least 700 words in length, but no more than 800 words in total. The profile must explain the following:
  1. the reasons for applying to the Institute – what is the motivation for wishing to join the Institute
  2. a description of the applicant's role
  3. how this role is related to biomedical science
  4. how the applicant is developing their career through the acquisition of further knowledge and skills.
  • A summary curriculum vitae that includes details of all relevant qualifications, all posts held and any authorships, publications or professional appointments to date. This must include copies of certificates, professional awards or documentary evidence of success as appropriate
  • A letter in support of this application written on headed note paper and signed by an appropriate training lead, line manager, professional peer or a current Institute Fellow, which should endeavour to confirm the information in the above points together with a personal recommendation for membership

Application process

Prospective Licentiate members must submit the following to the Institute:

  • The personal profile, summary curriculum vitae and supporting letter, as indicated above
  • A completed application form (please note: all applicants must attempt to complete the proposal section of the application. If there are no Institute members available to sign on the applicant’s behalf it may be signed by the individual named in the letter of support)
  • The appropriate £20 registration fee, £30 assessment fee and Licentiate subscription fee.

The outcome of an application will be communicated to an individual within 4 weeks.

If you have further queries on joining the Institute please contact us on + 44 (0)20 7713 0214 or mc@ibms.org.
