Passwords and security
Choosing a secure password
When choosing a password please consider the following guidelines.
- Your password should not be your IBMS membership number.
- Do not use your first, middle or last name in any form.
- Do not use any nicknames you may have.
- Do not select obvious passwords, such as the name (or nickname) of a family member, friend or pet.
- Do not use other information easily obtained about you such as your date of birth, current home address or telephone number.
- Do not set a password that is a word contained in English or foreign language dictionaries, spelling lists or other lists of words. It is far more secure to make-up, 'muddle', mis-spell or create words and names.
- Select a password that is easy for you to remember, but not for others to guess. This could be information that is personal to you but no-one else will know: an old street address, the initials of a song or phrase that you can easily remember, a writer, old film, name of album, etc.
Keeping your password and IBMS membership number confidential
Keeping your IBMS number and password confidential is important to protect your account from unauthorised use.
- Never disclose your IBMS number and/or password to someone else, including your manager, supervisor or work colleagues.
- Do not write your password down unless it is absolutely necessary. (If you must write it down, store it in a private and physically secure location separate from your IBMS membership number.)
- If you receive a document that displays the number and/or password for your account, please keep the document in a private and physically secure place.
- If you are about to type your number and/or password and someone is near you, take care that they cannot see what you type.
- If you suspect someone else has used your account, change your password immediately and report the details to the IBMS website team as soon as possible.
- If you suspect that the security of your password has been compromised, change it immediately.
