Good professional practice

One of the most important roles of the Institute as a professional body is the development of biomedical science and maintenance of professional standards of practice for patient care and safety.

Those who work in biomedical science require and expect expert guidance from their professional body which should provide leadership and help ensure safe and effective practice for quality patient care. Consequently the Institute sets standards of education, professional practice and ethics for its members and the wider profession. These Institute standards are not only consistent with comparable statutory or regulatory standards, but will also help guide individuals whose practice is non-regulated.

This guide to good professional practice has been developed to help those who work in biomedical science to reassure their employers, professional colleagues, service users and the wider general public that any decisions made will be well-informed, reasoned and justifiable.

Good Professional Practice also defines a foundation of principles for effective, competent and safe practice that hold true for any changes in science, technology and service delivery.
