Pathology Benchmarking is a project aiming to develop a clinical benchmarking system that will bring together laboratory, managerial and epidemiological data to provide insight into comparative aspects of diagnostic test delivery across the NHS.
The IBMS has representatives on the steering group as well as specialty panels for the National Pathology Benchmarking Service.
The National Pathology Benchmarking Service, established in 1994, has been developed in consultation with clinicians in each pathology discipline who are nominated by their respective professional bodies, and built around feedback from participants.
It is a non-competitive programme designed 'by the users, for the users', and is an essential management tool for helping improve and reconfigure Pathology services, particularly in this world of modernisation and increasing financial pressure.
The National Pathology Benchmarking Service is backed by The Royal College of Pathologists, The Association of Clinical Scientists (ACS), and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
