Degree assessment

Non-IBMS accredited degrees

If the degree course is not an Institute accredited BSc (Hons) degree graduates will need to submit details of their degree programme for assessment. This can be done by downloading the degree assessment form and submitting it along with a copy of their degree certificate, module descriptors to show the content, learning outcomes and assessment level of the entire course syllabus, degree transcript and the assessment fee. Also required is a copy of either a birth certificate or the personal details page of a passport.  If required, official notification of a change of name should be included.

If you are submitting an overseas qualification(s) for assessment, a statement of comparability from UK NARIC must be included with your application, indicating the UK equivalence of the qualification(s).

Subsequent to the assessment, candidates may be required to undertake supplementary education from an IBMS accredited undergraduate degree to satisfy the educational requirements of IBMS Registration Training Portfolio and hence the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for registration as a biomedical scientist.

Please note that degrees that are not equivalent to an honours degree may be rejected and the applicant advised to complete an IBMS accredited honours degree.

Re-evaluation and appeals

Degree assessors may request further information if this will help with their evaluation.

Applicants may appeal against the assessment outcome if they feel information was overlooked or they omitted documentation from the evaluation which may have made a difference to the evaluation outcome. A written statement must be made by applicants clearly stipulating the basis on which they are appealing the evaluation and additional documentation must be provided where appropriate.

The Institute's Education and Professional Development Committee will be the final arbitrator of appeals.

All appeals must be made in writing to the Registration Department within eight weeks from the date of the assessment outcome letter.

IBMS accredited BSc degrees

Graduates with an Institute-accredited BSc (Hons) degree will not require a letter from the IBMS confirming this but when applying for a Registration Training Portfolio should submit either a copy of a letter from the university confirming their enrolment on an accredited BSc (Hons) undergraduate degree programme or a copy of the degree certificate.

Please note that individuals with an IBMS accredited MSc will still be required to have their undergraduate qualifications assessed as the accredited MSc is not a qualification that meets the HCPC academic subjects in its own right.
