New competition category

Choosing winners for our competitions was harder than ever this year. We had over 700 submissions and hundreds of them were amazing pictures. In order to choose our ten winners we shortlisted our favourite pictures from each category, checked who were from members, checked the remaining against number of likes on Facebook and Twitter etc, and triangulated what we felt was a good range of winners from across the four nations.

When we got to the end of this process we were sad not to reward some of the great efforts of our members - but none more so than Microbiology at Mid Essex who climbed Mount Snowdon to bring us their group photo with placards. Unfortunately, the pictures were quite small and we couldn't quite read what it said on the placards but in retrospect we decided that this kind of effort could not go unrewarded. On the back of this team's climbing, we have decided to start a special new category for “non-workplace photo”.

Going forward, this will be awarded to a member or group of members who show a special or creative commitment to biomedical science outside of the workplace.

Microbiology at Mid Essex have captured the spirit of this award by joining together in a team activity, reaching new heights and showing their commitment to the profession.
