IBMS laboratory training approval
The IBMS requires that the following IBMS qualification portfolios are completed in a laboratory with IBMS laboratory training approval:
- IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I and II
- IBMS Registration Training Portfolio
- IBMS Specialist Portfolios
- IBMS Diploma of Biomedical Science

About IBMS Portfolio Qualifications
Certificate of Achievement
They IBMS Certificate of Achievement portfolios are a collection of knowledge and skill requirements that demonstrate practice to the level and standard expected of a band 2 or 3 Assistant Practitioner or band 4 Associate Practitioner.
Certificate of Competence for HCPC Registration
The IBMS Registration Training Portfolio is a record of evidence showing that candidates have achieved the competencies and standards outlined in the Registration Training Portfolio and meet the HCPC Standards of Proficiency.
Equivalence Route to HCPC Registration
The Certificate of Competence by Equivalence (Biomedical Scientist) portfolio enables the assessment of experiential learning for experienced practitioners in genetics and andrology in diagnostic laboratories for HCPC Registration as a biomedical scientist.
The portfolio enables biomedical scientists to provide evidence of training, practical skills, specialist knowledge and competency gained in the two years after HCPC registration.
Diploma in Biomedical Science
The Diploma in Biomedical Science to enable the recognition of structured, standardised post-registration training and assessment of registered biomedical scientists in newly emerging multi-disciplinary services.
That time limits for completing our qualifications have been removed. However, there will be an expiry limit of 3 years on any outdated version of a portfolio from the date a new version is introduced. There is still a requirement for evidence to be current i.e. within 3 years of the declaration, application for verification or examination. Evidence older than this will be discounted by the IBMS, verifier or examiner.
Payment for IBMS qualifications
You can pay for IBMS qualifications by:
- cheque or postal order made payable to IBMS
- purchase order
Payment by purchase order
If you are paying by purchase order you must attach the purchase order document to the qualification application form.
A purchase order document is a separate document detailing the following information:
- Purchase Order Number
- Order Details
- Invoice Address
We are unable to match purchase order documents sent separately from qualification application forms.
If you do not attach the purchase order document to the qualification application form, the form will be returned to the laboratory manager.
