Biomedical Science Day 2024

Last updated: 15th October 2024

bms day 2024

Biomedical Science Day 2024 was a huge success as biomedical scientists and laboratory staff across the UK came together to showcase their workplaces, colleagues, and expertise, all in the name of promoting their profession and the incredible work they do.

It was a day filled with fab displays, engaging lab tours, interactive science demonstrations, and a lot of cake (because who doesn't love cake?).

The hashtags #BiomedicalScienceDay2024 and #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare received over 15,000 mentions on Twitter X, with over 80,000 engagements, ensuing potentially almost 1.5 million people in the UK viewed our posts. For another year running #BiomedicalScienceDay2024 was trending in the top 20 in the UK.

Throughout the day, we updated followers on what was happening through our live blog - with posts from members and events across the UK.

Events and activities

This year our Activity Fund supported a record number of applicants as 50 members' events were provided with funding at a total of £19,200.

We also had the most applicants for our event packs this year. In total 310 packs were delivered to sites across the UK.

Photo gallery and competitions

Across the UK, laboratories took over their hospital social media accounts as biomedical science laboratory staff used them to celebrate and inform their followers about the vital role they play in healthcare.

Our large collection of photos that IBMS members shared can be found in our Facebook photo gallery.

The photo competition winners have been announced.

Commemorating D-Day

As the 80th anniversary of the D-Day operations took place on the same day as Biomedical Science Day 2024, the IBMS held an evening event for all members who currently serve or have served in the armed forces.

Over 100 members attended the event held at the Imperial War Museum where presentations took place from members of the IBMS History Committee and Lt Col (Retd) Gary Fitchett.
