This year the RCPath and UK Liver Pathology Group are working together to provide a two-day course of lectures and practical experience in liver pathology. Delegates have the option of attending either or both of the days.

The first day will provide a practical diagnostic approach to reporting medical liver biopsies, focusing on the importance of clinico-pathological correlation in assessing common patterns of liver damage. Recommended for senior trainees in Pathology and Hepatology and consultant histopathologists and gastroenterologists who are regularly involved in liver biopsy assessment (without necessarily working in a Liver Unit).

The second day will be a slide-based practical workshop for histopathologists which will cover the main types of medical liver disease as well as a range of focal liver lesions.

Day 1 - Liver Biopsy in the Assessment of Medical Liver Disease

Thursday 5th March 2020 (5CPD Points)

This course, organised by Professor Stefan Hübscher, will be delivered for the tenth time in 2020. Presentations by hepatologists and histopathologists cover the investigation of medical liver diseases.
The course provides a practical diagnostic approach to reporting medical liver biopsies, focusing on the importance of clinico-pathological correlation in assessing common patterns of liver damage.

Day 2 - Histopathology Workshop -  Liver Pathology

Friday 6th March 2020 (5CPD Points)
This slide-based practical workshop for histopathologists is devised for consultants working outside specialist liver centres, and trainees in stage C or D who have an interest in liver pathology.  It is designed to complement the annual course; ‘Liver biopsy in the assessment of medical liver disease’, but also works as a stand-alone course.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the session individuals should:

  • Have pre-viewed a range of liver cases, as virtual slides pre-meeting, and also available using iPads during the meeting.
  • Be confident in recognising common patterns of medical liver disease in liver biopsies
  • Understand the role of different special stains in medical liver biopsies
  • Have gained an understanding of the pathological assessment of focal liver lesions

Due to the variation in provision of liver services, there is limited exposure to liver histopathology in some training programmes. This course would be particularly useful for trainees who are looking for a concise all-round practical learning opportunity in liver pathology. Delegates have the option of attending either or both of the days.
