Harvey's Lab Tour

On Friday, June 21st, the team at Antrim Laboratories was delighted to host a special Harvey’s Lab Tour for Isabella and her mum, Danielle.

Before entering the lab, Isabella was greeted with a personalised message on the whiteboard from the staff, welcoming her to Microbiology. This warm reception set the tone for a fun and educational visit.

Isabella put on her name badge and lab coat, fully immersing herself in the role of a scientist. She explored different parts of the lab, checking where samples are sent and learning about processing procedures. Staff also helped Isabella to understand how and why doctors and nurses need to conduct these tests.

During the tour, Isabella met a number of friendly laboratory staff who were eager to share their knowledge. Some highlights included:

  • Observing how samples arrive at the lab.
  • Seeing different types of analysers in action.
  • Viewing blood samples under a microscope.
  • Learning how bacteria is cultured on plates.
  • Inspecting the blood stocks used for patient transfusions.

Danielle, Isabella's mum, provided excellent feedback about the tour. The visit had a positive impact on Isabella, who later had a follow-up appointment with nephrology at the RBHSC.

Now more informed and less anxious, Isabella shared details of her lab visit with the consultant and nurses. Her knowledge, including recognising the different colours of blood bottles and understanding the microscope views of samples, helped her remain calm and relaxed during her regular blood tests.
