British Science Week celebrations

Biomedical scientists around the UK held fun events to celebrate British Science Week

British Science Week is an annual week-long celebration of science in Britain. Recently professionals, scientists, organisations and students gathered from across the UK to share and promote the latest developments across scientific disciplines.

IBMS members were at the forefront of British Science Week activities. Biomedical Scientist Mike Carter from Public Health England looked at microbes and handwashing with primary school students and answered questions from secondary school students about microbiology careers.

IBMS member Jessica Suter ran a busy stand at Eaton Park Science Day. With over 400 attendees, Jessica and her colleagues were kept busy with microscopy, live drawing, a poster competition, crafts and experiments.

Jessica said, “The turnout for the event was absolutely overwhelming, it was a real win for science. I met some amazing people from such diverse backgrounds and the children seemed so happy and enthusiastic.

For me science is an expressive community where great minds come together and work out how they can improve the future for the next generation, it's extremely rewarding. What the future holds for me once I graduate is unclear as I love so many areas in science, but I know that it will be exciting."
