Nick Kirk handed over his Chain of Office to Ian, saying: “It hardly seems like two years since I was standing where Ian stands now, but it is and my time as President has truly flown by.”. He reflected on his time as President, “by the time I step down as Past President in December 2016, I will have served on the IBMS Council for over 20 years. Ian began his career as a Junior MLSO, working hard to obtain professional and management qualifications and subsequently joining Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2007 firstly as Operations Manager and then as Histopathology Manager. He is now Pathology Services Manager at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Ian hopes that his career journey: “Might inspire other biomedical scientists to reach the heights that I have been able to achieve.”.

Ian is a Chartered Scientist and Fellow of the Institute, and has been an East Midlands IBMS Region Council Member since 2001. He has held a variety of positions at the IBMS, from Member of the Operational Committee to Chair of the Membership and Marketing Committee. He is also an Assessor for a variety of IBMS qualifications, and an External Examiner for the University of Westminster.

Upon receiving his Chain of Office, Ian stated that: “I am honoured to be part of such a prestigious organisation and privileged to be given the opportunity to guide our profession into the future.”. Ian looks forward to the challenge of his presidency, and says that: “Over the next 2 years I look forward to building on our success as a professional body; delivering the qualifications, recognition, support and guidance that our members need to develop their careers and deliver a service that is fit for purpose and fit for the future.”.
