IBMS Campaign Wins Gold and Silver Awards

Association Excellence Awards recognise our efforts to inspire the next generation of biomedical scientists while helping members attract well-informed, qualified applicants for essential roles

We are delighted to announce that our Become a Biomedical Scientist campaign has been recognised with two prestigious awards at the Association Excellence Awards 2024. The campaign received Gold for Best Awareness Campaign and Silver for Best Video, celebrating its impact in raising awareness of biomedical science careers and guiding aspiring professionals into the field. The collaboration with Liquona (who have supported our video and VR productions since 2018) was also a triple winner at this year's Memcom Excellence Awards.

The judges praised the campaign’s innovative approach to targeting young students through accessible, engaging content that demystifies the pathway to becoming a biomedical scientist. Using a combination of virtual reality (VR) and targeted video, the campaign reached over 1 million people on social media and contributed to a 7% rise in IBMS Accredited degree enrolments. The judges commended the campaign as “a simple, low-cost campaign with huge long-term benefits to the NHS and public,” highlighting its inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness in sparking interest in this vital profession.

Campaign Highlights

  • Best Awareness Campaign: Judges highlighted the campaign’s strategy, which aimed to make the biomedical science career more visible and accessible to young people, describing it as “a refreshing approach to reach out to younger students… to a relatively unknown but worthwhile profession.”

  • Best Blog, Podcast, or Video: The campaign’s video content, featuring a fun retro video game theme, was described as “well-made and unstuffy” with clear, engaging language tailored to the audience. Short, easy-to-follow videos presented by students helped break down the complex journey to registration and career paths in biomedical science.

The awards reflect the hard work and creativity of everyone involved in this campaign. We are proud to see the campaign’s meaningful impact, not only in raising awareness but also in attracting well-informed applicants who possess the right qualifications for critical roles within biomedical science. By addressing common misconceptions around registration, the campaign supports IBMS members in recruiting candidates who are prepared and properly qualified, helping to strengthen the profession for the future. We look forward to continuing this vital work to inspire the next generation of biomedical scientists and serve the needs of our members.
