IBMS Fellow Stephen Merridew Honoured with BEM
Award recognises over 40 years of service to biomedical science and the NHS
The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) acknowledges the achievement of IBMS Fellow Stephen Merridew, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s New Year’s Honours List. This award highlights his significant contributions to the NHS and the biomedical science profession over the course of his career.
Stephen began his career in 1978 at Bridgend General Hospital, working as a biomedical scientist for more than 40 years. Following his retirement as a senior biomedical scientist, Stephen returned in 2018 as a specialist training manager. In this role, he has played a key part in supporting the development of future biomedical scientists, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience to mentor postgraduate students.
The BEM recognises the professional dedication Stephen has shown throughout his career, as well as his ongoing contribution to education and training within the profession. He will receive the medal from the Lord Lieutenant of Glamorgan at a local ceremony and is also set to attend a Buckingham Palace Garden Party later this year.
Stephen commented:
I am currently in my 47 th year in the NHS, beginning my career in 1978 as a Junior-A MLSO. I have been a Fellow of The IBMS for forty years and a Specialist Portfolio Examiner for the last 7 years. I was delighted to receive the letter from The Cabinet Office informing me of the award of The British Empire Medal. I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with such a great team of colleagues over the years, including my wife Debbie who was also a biomedical scientist working in the same department. I have found working as a biomedical scientist immensely enjoyable and challenging over the years, but have always felt a sense of achievement knowing that our work makes a huge difference to peoples' lives. I am now working as a Specialist Training Manager overseeing the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Medical Biochemistry and Blood Sciences at Swansea Bay UHB.
Ruth Thomsen, Scientific Director, London Region, NHS England, was also recognised in the Honours List, receiving an MBE for her services to healthcare science.
