IBMS member wins Chief Scientific Officer Award 2017
7 March 2017
Congratulations to IBMS North West Regional Council member Dave Eccleston who won the CSO Equality & Diversity Leadership Award for his work at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories traineeship programme.

The CSO Awards celebrate the diversity of contributions healthcare science makes to the NHS and patient care through leadership, clinical research, technological innovation and communicating science to the public. Attending the awards for the IBMS, along with Dave Eccleston, were Chief Executive Jill Rodney and President Ian Sturdgess.

Professor Sue Hill OBE, NHS Chief Scientific Officer said of the awards:

“The Healthcare Science Awards showcase the crucial contribution that science makes to the NHS and Public Health to ensure high quality care for all, now and for future generations. “

Award winning Liverpool Clinical Laboratories traineeship programme

The traineeship programme, for 16 – 24 year olds on Merseyside, is aimed at getting young people interested in careers in healthcare science. The 13 week course combines classroom based learning at Wirral Met College along with on the job training at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories. Students are taught how to receive and check blood and tissues samples and to perform laboratory reception duties, giving them the skills to help apply for work as laboratory assistants.

Dave is Head of Modernising Scientific Careers at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories and is also an IBMS council member for the North West Region. Of the traineeship programme he said:

“This course is an opportunity to not only show young people the range of rewarding and valued careers in the NHS but to give them skills and experience.  By offering a high quality work experience placement at the end of the training, students boost their chances of getting paid employment and improve their career prospects, whether that’s with us or with other NHS organisations”.

On collecting his award Dave was quick to point out the contributions of his teams: Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, OD & Learning, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool at Work and Wirral Metropolitan College. He said:

I’m extremely proud and honoured as a Biomedical Scientist to have received this award. I am accepting this award on behalf of all the team that have made this project a success. I look forward to further developing the project engaging with the communities we serve and with those young people from under-represented groups within the Merseyside area.

The IBMS congratulates Dave for his award and his contribution to promoting the biomedical science profession and healthcare to young people.
