19 October 2016
IBMS members Claire Daws and her colleagues highlighted the career opportunities in biomedical science at the Jersey Skills show

Organised by Careers Jersey, the Jersey Skills Show is an annual event created for students and university leavers. This two day show encourages visitors to participate in fun activities that introduce careers, including those in the biomedical sciences and healthcare sector.

Senior Biomedical Scientist Claire Daws FIBMS CSci, and her colleagues talked with visitors about the importance of biomedical science in diagnosis, disease prevention and treatment. The highlights of their stand include:

  • A presentation showing the different disciplines and various photographs of the laboratory, equipment, and staff processing specimens
  • A quiz “What is that?” with 5 laboratory related items with a guided tour of the laboratory as a prize
  • A digital microscope, with a monitor under which were slides of histology sections, Gram’s stains and Blood films
  • Displays of agar plates and histology blocks

Claire’s team also presented three case studies with laboratory results, posters and pictures on the stand. They discussed laboratory disciplines and the usefulness of an accredited degree to pursue a career as a biomedical scientist.

Claire commented, “A number of staff volunteered to give up their free time to support our stand and promote the profession. It was a success!”

It is estimated that approximately 3,500 visitors attended this event. Read here for more information about the Jersey Skills show.
