IBMS Pays Tribute to Professor Sir Stephen Powis

England’s top doctor to stand down after over seven years - IBMS acknowledges his leadership and support for pathology and patient safety

The IBMS recognises and pays tribute to the significant contributions of Professor Sir Stephen Powis, who has today announced that he will step down as National Medical Director of NHS England this summer, after more than seven years in the role.

Professor Powis played a pivotal role in leading the NHS through the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that frontline healthcare workers were supported and the public received expert medical guidance. His leadership helped shape national strategies in patient safety, cardiovascular and respiratory health, and stroke care. Throughout his tenure, he worked closely with the pathology profession, acknowledging and championing the vital role of biomedical science in delivering patient care.

IBMS Chief Executive David Wells said:

I had the pleasure to work directly with Professor Sir Stephen Powis and he has always been a steadfast advocate for the healthcare science workforce, particularly during the extraordinary challenges of the pandemic. His leadership and collaboration with the pathology profession have been invaluable in ensuring that diagnostics remain at the heart of patient care. The IBMS thanks him for his dedication to improving patient outcomes and supporting our members' critical work in laboratories across the country. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

During his tenure, Professor Powis oversaw key developments, including the creation of the NHS's first national patient safety strategy, the expansion of the medical examiner programme, and critical improvements in stroke and cardiovascular care. His legacy will continue to shape the NHS and support the future of healthcare in England.

Professor Powis will remain in post until July, focusing on his work in medical training, stroke care, and national inquiry commitments. The IBMS extends its gratitude for his contributions and looks forward to continuing its collaboration with NHS leadership to advance diagnostic services and patient care.
