IBMS Verifiers and Examiners: Matt Griffiths

Highlighting the Vital Role of Our Expert Volunteers

This year, we are celebrating the invaluable contributions of our verifiers and examiners by highlighting the essential work they do for the profession. These dedicated professionals play a crucial role in maintaining high standards, verifying the skills of the next generation of biomedical scientists, and ensuring the continuous improvement of our field. Through their tireless efforts, they uphold the integrity and excellence that define the IBMS and the biomedical science community.

This month we spoke to Dr Matt Griffiths, Principal Lecturer in Cellular Pathology at Nottingham Trent University.

Why did you get involved in completing IBMS verifications / examinations in the first instance?

I got involved with Registration verifications and Specialist examinations because I saw it as a way to support colleagues in the profession. I have found that I gain a lot from doing these visits, it’s very mutually beneficial arrangement not an altruistic act.

Would you say your practice, or your workplace has benefited from your involvement in verifications / examinations?
I have a university role, but am also Deputy Chief Examiner for the Cellular Pathology IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma, so doing verifications and examinations is really helpful in seeing how new entrants to the profession are being prepared by their undergraduate study and how those who are beginning their specialisation journey are developing in practice.

What's your favourite thing about being an IBMS verifier / examiner?
The smiles on the faces of successful candidates. There are lots of other things, the variety of labs I get to visit, experiencing new ways of doing things, seeing new equipment in use, the growing application of digital pathology and so on – but being able to tell a candidate that they have successfully completed their verification or passed specialist examination is incredibly rewarding.

Would you recommend becoming an IBMS verifier / examiner to others?
Without any hesitation. It’s a great role to undertake, and tremendously beneficial.
