Ian Cowie and Richard Webber received silver medals at this year’s AGM

On the 18 November in Glasgow, the IBMS Scottish branch held their AGM and scientific meeting.

This year’s theme was ‘Change is the only constant’. This well-attended event featured a debate on accreditation by Quality Manager Dr Paula McDonald and UKAS Technical Assessor Eric Martindale, followed by a talk by IBMS CEO Jill Rodney on the IBMS forward strategy 2020.

Also amongst the proceedings was the awarding of medals, to honour the outstanding commitment and dedication to the profession for 50 years of continuous membership.

John ‘Ian’ Cowie CSci FIBMS

Ian joined the IBMS in 1967, beginning a career in clinical chemistry at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. In 2002, Ian established the company Point Of Care Testing Ltd, which is today a leading supplier of Point of Care products throughout the UK and Ireland.

Richard Webber FIBMS

Richard began his career in surgical histology at Guys’ Hospital in London, and later specialised in haematology at the Western General. He worked as a Chief BMS at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before moving to the Haematology Department of Yorkhill Hospital, lecturing in haematology in his spare time.

The IBMS is pleased to formally honour the outstanding membership and professional commitment of Ian and Richard to the field of biomedical science. 

IBMS President Ian Sturdgess commented, “The Institute is truly grateful to have members give such experience and dedication to the profession.”
