Revised guidance: returning to practice
The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) have released a revised guidance on returning to practice.
This guidance follows a consultation in 2016 and is available on the HCPC website. The guidance was relaunched in June 2017, and is intended for health and care professionals who are either not practising; who are considering returning to practice, or are contemplating a future break in their practice. This guidance will also be of use to employers who may wish to employ professionals who are returning to practice.
The Institute's guide, Good Professional Practice, adds that:
‘Biomedical science professionals returning to practice has a responsibility to undertake a period of re-familiarisation and, if necessary, retraining. Those responsible for the supervision or retraining of staff have a responsibility to ensure an appropriate period of re-familiarisation and training is undertaken and competence assessed prior to full resumption of duties.’
The IBMS further recommends that persons who are considering returning to practice in a clinical laboratory setting utilise the Institute’s qualifications to update their skills.
