14th Annual Schools Science Conference allows IBMS member to engage with students

Held at the University of Westminster, the Schools Science Conference showcased science careers to over 300 students. This year’s theme was ‘Science for Transformation’.

IBMS member and Principal Biomedical Scientist & Pathology Services Manager at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, Sue Alexander CSci FIBMS ran the IBMS stand. This is her 14th year at the event.

Sue commented, “There was a lot of interest in what biomedical science is. Students were asking, ‘do I need a degree or not?’ You’re opening their eyes to a huge range of careers in biomedical science.”
She explained to students about the necessary background for a career in biomedical science, and how rewarding it can be. “From theoretical to practical, this conference is excellent in that it lets students see real scientists and learn about the professional application of science.”
She explained that getting the right knowledge of subjects is essential, for “what you study now has relevance to your future career. Getting the degree is one thing, but what you do after that is important. You can branch out, and you never know where it’s going to go. Science and technology are very dynamic. What you do in five years won’t be what you’re doing now.”
On the topic of sandwich placements, Sue advised “Make the most of your placement year, and figure out if this is the career for you. It’s as competitive as medicine.”

The conference also featured fun workshops on sneezes, amino acids and proteins, a quiz for visitors to complete, and a keynote lecture to attend, as well as an award to the best research project of the year for the Association for Clinical Biochemistry & Laboratory Medicine Trophy for the Don Henderson Award.
