The introduction of ISO 15189:2022
6 December 2022
The IBMS, RCPath and ACB give an overview of the key changes included in the updated ISO 15189:2022

The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath), Association for Clinical Biochemistry & Laboratory Medicine (ACB) in collaboration with the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) have produced an overview of the key changes included in the updated ISO 15189:2022 - Medical Laboratories – Requirements for quality and competence standard, to guide healthcare professionals when implementing the new requirements in their service.

The IBMS have been involved with revising the standard from the outset and are hugely supportive of the newly published document. IBMS President Debra Padgett said:

Whilst the majority of the standard remains unchanged and the terminology is consistent with that currently described in local Quality Management Systems, I welcome the focus on better understanding the risks of the services we provide to the patient, mitigating those risks and ensuring that we put the patient at the heart of everything we do.

The IBMS look forward to supporting members during the transition period, working collaboratively with UKAS, RCPath, ACB and colleagues in other professional bodies.
