As a graduate with an IBMS Accredited degree, you already have an advantage over those with non-accredited BSc degrees, as your degree meets the academic criteria set by the HCPC Standards of Education and Training.
However, to register as a biomedical scientist with the HCPC, you must also complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio (Certificate of Competence) in an IBMS approved training laboratory.
Securing a clinical laboratory role
Trainee biomedical scientist positions are highly competitive, so you need to make yourself stand out. You might also look for medical laboratory assistant roles or associate practitioner roles.
To improve your chances of securing a role:
- Submit an outstanding application ensure your CV and cover letter highlight your academic achievements, practical skills, and commitment to the profession. A good awareness of the HCPC and the importance of registration.
- Research the laboratory before interview – understand their services and demonstrate your enthusiasm for their specialisms.
Some laboratories may recruit IBMS Accredited graduates as medical laboratory assistants (MLAs) or assistant practitioners (APs) before training them for biomedical scientist roles. However, this is not guaranteed, so ensure your employer supports your development if you take this route.
Gaining relevant experience
If you are unable to secure a healthcare laboratory role immediately, consider:
- Industry laboratory work – private sector experience can provide transferable laboratory skills.
- Other types of work experience – roles in administration, retail, or customer service help develop communication, organisation, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, all of which are valued in laboratory environments.
Demonstrating a strong work ethic and transferable skills will help you stand out when applying for biomedical scientist training roles in the future
