Degree assesment

The IBMS evaluates non-accredited qualifications against
HCPC education standards to determine if supplementary
education (top-up modules) is required for registration as
a biomedical scientist

The IBMS assesses non-accredited qualifications against the HCPC standards of education and training, and the curriculum from the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement to determine if supplementary education is required.

How to apply

Before applying, read the Application Guidance and Degree Assessment FAQs documents.

For data protection, applications are split into two parts:

  • Part A (Personal Information) – Submit as a single PDF including proof of ID, degree certificate, and academic transcript.
  • Part B (Academic Content) – Submit as a single PDF with module content authenticated by the university (in the order listed on your transcript), an anonymised copy of your transcript and an anonymised copy of your full research project. Personal information must not be included.

Only degrees completed within the last 10 years can be considered. Incomplete applications or incorrect formatting will be returned.

Once prepared, send both parts as email attachments to [email protected]. If attachments are too large, use a secure online file-sharing service such as OneDrive, WeTransfer, or Google Drive.

Processing time

Once a degree assessment application has been approved to be assessed, and the payment has been received, it will then be sent to an assessor. The majority of degree assessments are completed within 12 weeks from this stage of the process.

When the assessment process has been completed, you will receive a confirmation letter and a copy of the assessment review form via email. The review form will indicate the areas of supplementary education that you are required to cover, in order to meet the academic criteria for HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist

Arranging supplementary education

To complete any required supplementary education:

  1. Contact IBMS Accredited universities directly and send course tutors your degree assessment outcome
  2. Enquire if the BSc Biomedical Science modules are available to take as top-up
  3. Choose the best mode of study (full-time, part-time, some universities may offer online).

Important:

  • You may begin your IBMS Registration Training Portfolio (Certificate of Competence) if the support is available in your laboratory for training at the same time as studying your top-up modules. Please note that the portfolio verification can only proceed after all modules are completed.

After completing all required supplementary education

Once you finish all your required supplementary education:

  • Obtain a completion letter from your university confirming the specific modules covered and the mark awarded.
  • Submit this letter to the IBMS with your Registration Training Portfolio application or when requesting portfolio verification.

For more information, visit the IBMS Accredited universities directory and search for courses offering top-up modules.
