Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Championing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Biomedical Science

At the IBMS, we value the diversity of our membership and are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. By celebrating difference and challenging inequality, we aim to shape a profession that reflects and serves the whole of society.

We are proud to be a signatory of the Science Council's Declaration on Diversity, Equality and Inclusion and continue to benchmark our performance using the Diversity and Inclusion Progression Framework. This initiative, developed by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Science Council, supports long-term, meaningful progress in professional bodies like ours.

Driving progress and accountability

Our commitment to EDI has been a dedicated stream of work within the Membership and Marketing Committee since 2014. We’ve received independent benchmarking reports highlighting our strengths and identifying areas for growth—feedback that continues to shape our strategy and initiatives.

To drive this work forward, we launched the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group in 2022, chaired by Tahmina Hussain, a National Council Member. The group includes passionate IBMS members from across the UK and plays a vital role in advancing our vision for a more inclusive profession.
