Biomedical Science Day 2026 Competition Winners
Since it started in 2017, Biomedical Science Day has grown to become the largest awareness campaign for our profession. That success is thanks to the thousands of biomedical scientists, laboratory staff and students who take the time to share their stories and help raise awareness of the vital role biomedical science plays in healthcare.
The creativity on display in this year's competition was a perfect reflection of that commitment.
Below are the winners and honourable mentions from the 2026 Biomedical Science Day competition.
Best biomedical bake (best cake)
This entry, titled Pathonopoly, was an inventive take on a classic board game. Created by Sharon Bennett from King's Mill Pathology, this bake impressed with its creativity and attention to detail. See how many familiar laboratory references you can spot.
Best display or stand
This submssion from from Lena Forsyth from Robert Gordon University was a clear crowd favourite. The judges loved how busy and interactive the stand was, with plenty of younger visitors getting stuck in, learning more about biomedical science.
Best individual photo
Featuring Julius Kyei Baffour from University Hospitals Dorset, this winning workspace photo offers a look into the environment where biomedical science happens every day. The judges were impressed by the composition of the image and how it shows both the individual and the lab setting at the heart of their work.
Best individual photo with placard
This winning entry feature Justin Link from North Wales Microbiology. This submissions puts a spotlight on the 551,430 samples processed each year, showing the sheer scale and impact of the laboratory's work.
Best group photo
This winning group photo from Sussex Pathology Ltd captured a proud moment for the team. Celebrating Biomedical Science Day in their newly opened laboratory, the judges loved the energy and smiles on display.
Honourable mention
North Wales Microbiology earned an honourable mention for taking Biomedical Science Day out onto the sports field. This photo shows the team's sports day celebration, bringing colleagues together for some friendly competition away from the laboratory.
Best group photo with placard
This winning entry from Good Hope Hospital, North Birmingham, shows us three biomedical science at different career stages. Featuring a Biomedical Scientist, Specialist Biomedical Scientist and Senior Biomedical Scientist, it was a simple but effective way to highlight the opportunities for progression within the profession.
Best video
Created by Zonya, Obi and Zara from the Manchester Medical Microbiology Partenrship, Number One Verifier is a fun and memorable celebration of the verification process. Complete with parody songs, custom Jim Taylor and Sue Jones masks, and plenty of references that verifiers will recognise, the video shows an impressive amount of creativity and effort. The judges loved its humour, attention to detail and clear appreciation for the colleagues who support biomedical science training and development.
Honourable mention
Submitted by Ma Inah Junessa Rosales from HCA Laboratories (Shropshire House), this video takes viewers on a journey through the laboratory, appreciating all the different teams and disciplines that keep the service running.
Best artwork
Submitted by Afza Bokhari from Royal Preston Hospital, this striking artwork offers a unique interpretation of #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare. Combining anatomy with microbiology culture plates, the piece beautifully captures the connection between biomedical science and patient care.
Best lab-themed costume
Coag Man (Paulo from Haemotology) swooped in to take the top spot in this year's lab-themed costume category. Submitted by Melanie Armstrong from Isle of Wight NHS Trust, this entry brought plenty of fun to Biomedical Science Day.
Honourable mention
Randa Bonis earned an honourable mention for this superhero-inspired Biomedical Science Day video. Complete with a cape, PPE and a soundtrack of I Need a Hero, the entry was a fun celebration of the real-life heroes working #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare.
Best meme
Submitted by Emma Brooker from Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, this KPop Demon Hunters inspired meme helps to capture a universal laboratory experience.

Thank you to everyone who took part in Biomedical Science Day 2026 and submitted an entry to this year's competition.
The level of creativity and effort on display made judging really difficult, and the entries showed the many different ways we can celebrate the profession. Whether you organised an event, baked a cake, created a video, designed artwork or simply helped spread the word, you played a part in making this year's Biomedical Science Day a success.
