IBMS Awards 2025 – celebration, science and standing ovations

The winners of the IBMS Awards 2025 were announced at a dazzling showcase on Friday 4th July, bringing together some of the most inspiring professionals in biomedical science for a truly unforgettable evening at The Brewery in Central London

Hosted for the second year running by Dr Ed Patrick, a practising NHS anaesthetist and stand-up comedian, the event was packed with laughter, powerful stories and emotional moments. Ed’s unique blend of sharp humour and scientific insight made him the perfect host once again, reflecting both the passion and personality of the profession.

The first of two awards for Gayle Johnstone and the team at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary came with the announcement of Harvey’s Lab Tour of the Year, a new category created to honour young Harvey’s powerful legacy in public engagement. Gayle accepted the award from Malcolm Robinson, founder of Harvey’s Lab Tours, in an emotional moment that brought huge applause from the audience.

But it was the final award of the night, the prestigious Biomedical Science Champion,  that brought the room to its feet. Chosen from all category winners, this overall accolade was awarded to Dumfries and Galloway for their remarkable work in raising public awareness of biomedical science. As Gayle returned to the stage, joined by Malcolm, she received a standing ovation and was met with cheers and tears from across the room; a fitting tribute to the impact of her team’s work and the inspiration behind it.

Gayle said:

I’m completely overwhelmed. This isn’t just about our team in Dumfries and Galloway, it’s about showing the public the heart of our profession. To receive this award, with Malcolm here, in Harvey’s name, means more than words can say. I’m just so proud of what we’ve achieved.
