IBMS endorses SHOT safety standards
The IBMS is proud to endorse the SHOT Transfusion Safety Standards, a vital framework designed to strengthen patient safety, accountability, and continuous learning across transfusion services in the UK.
Developed through extensive consultation with healthcare professionals, regulators, scientists, and patient representatives, the standards reflect national regulatory requirements and best practice guidance. They aim to support organisations in delivering safe, high-quality transfusion care through self-assessment and continuous improvement.
Covering eight key areas - from governance and haemovigilance to staff training, IT systems, and patient involvement - the SHOT standards provide a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to safer transfusions. The IBMS welcomes the standards’ focus on multidisciplinary working, a fair and supportive safety culture, and shared learning.
IBMS Chief Executive David Wells said:
The SHOT Transfusion Safety Standards represent an important step forward in strengthening transfusion practice and protecting patients. As the professional body for biomedical scientists, the IBMS is pleased to support their implementation and will continue to champion high standards, transparency and learning in transfusion care.
The IBMS encourages all members and healthcare organisations to engage with the SHOT Transfusion Safety Standards. Together, we can continue to drive improvements in transfusion safety and patient outcomes.
