Congratulations to all recipients of the 2026 Mary Macdonald Bursary.

The Mary Macdonald Bursary was established in memory of former IBMS Council member Mary Macdonald. Mary is remembered as an outstanding professional, colleague, and mentor. She began her career as a laboratory support worker and was keen to encourage and recognise excellence in others working in similar roles.

The Bursary aims to support biomedical science staff in undertaking the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I or II qualification. It covers the cost of the Part I or II portfolio and IBMS Associate membership fees for the year.

Congratulations to this year's winners:

  • Joshua Macintyre - Associate Practitioner at Hereford County Hospital, Wye Valley NHS Trust
  • Lynne Mosinski - POCT Support Assistant at Hereford County Hospital, Wye Valley NHS Trust
  • Anjali Rana -  Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

I am surprised and delighted to be awarded the Mary MacDonald Bursary 2026.

I am currently a Support Assistant in Point Of Care within the Pathology building of Hereford County Hospital.

Winning  this will afford me the ability to progress my professional and  personal development and therefore go on to further support  my whole team.

I was pleased to discover that there is an official portfolio available for biomedical support staff, offering deeper insight into biomedical laboratory work and recognizing our responsibilities.

I hadn’t expected to receive it, as I only transitioned into the biomedical field a year ago, but I’m truly happy and grateful to IBMS.''
