NHS Wales launches Healthcare Science Framework

The NHS Wales Healthcare Science Framework has officially launched, providing a clear and accessible guide on the various roles, opportunities and career pathways in healthcare science.
The IBMS contributed throughout the consultation process to ensure the Pathology and Genomics career pathway reflected the realities of biomedical science in Wales. This includes accurately mapping the different stages of the profession, from entry-level to senior roles, and charting the routes for professional development.
A one-stop resource
Built as a comprehensive guide, the framework brings together information for:
- Healthcare science professionals: covering education, funding and career progression in NHS Wales.
- Those exploring the profession: offering role descriptions across over 30 professions and 50+ service areas.
- Workforce managers and planners: supporting workforce transformation based on NHS Wales service needs.
While there are six healthcare science families in total, the Pathology and Genomics pathway will be of particular interest to IBMS members. It details the laboratory and diagnostic roles that underpin biomedical science in Wales and sets out clear routes from assistant through to consultant level.
The pathway shows the qualifications, training and experience needed at each stage, highlights opportunities for advanced practice, leadership and research, and signposts the funding and support available in Wales. This makes it easier for members to plan their career progression and identify development opportunities aligned to NHS Wales service needs.
Further detailed pathways will be available on the HEIW Healthcare Science Cymru website at a later date.
