Changes to our membership magazine

In 2026, our members will see a refreshed and more varied programme of content from The Biomedical Scientist.

04 Dec 2025

The publication schedule will shift from monthly to bi-monthly, and members will benefit from an expanded mix of digital, video and online features that reflect how you told us you would prefer to receive your content.

What’s changing
  • A bi-monthly magazine with more pages
Each issue will include an additional 16 pages, allowing space for new regular features, more in-depth coverage and increased CPD opportunities.
  • A richer digital experience
Members will gain access to a regular stream of extra content - online news articles, short features and sector updates will keep you informed between print issues.
  • Extended online features
New long-form online packages will explore key topics in depth, supported by animations and unique embedded video content.
  • Regular video content
Popular elements of the magazine will evolve into video formats – including My Lab, which will become a video tour for members to enjoy.
Why the change?

These developments follow extensive consultation with members, including a qualitative readership survey, an insight panel and a webinar where the proposed changes were presented. Members then voted on what they wanted to see from future content.

The response was overwhelmingly positive:

  • 86% loved or liked the proposed magazine frequency and format changes
  • 87% loved or liked the introduction of regular video content
  • 80% loved or liked the new extended online feature packages

Members told us they valued more depth, more flexibility, and more ways to engage with content. Moving to a bi-monthly print schedule creates space for a richer magazine, while the increased digital and video output ensures more frequent updates and greater variety throughout the year.

Supporting sustainability

The shift also brings meaningful environmental benefits. Publishing fewer print issues reduces paper use and waste, helping us support more sustainable ways of working. It also lowers the carbon footprint associated with printing and distribution — an important consideration as we continue to look for opportunities to reduce environmental impact across our activities.

When it begins

The new bi-monthly schedule for the extended print issues of The Biomedical Scientist will begin in January. Members can expect their copies to arrive around 27 January, followed by issues in March, May, July, September and November.

Alongside the updated print cycle, new digital content will begin appearing on thebiomedicalscientist.net from early 2026, giving members more frequent updates and a wider mix of articles, features and video content throughout the year.

We are confident that these changes will meet with what our members have asked for and will offer a more dynamic, engaging and accessible experience.
