Isaac and Isla's Lab Tour at DGRI

Isaac and Isla recently visited the Blood Sciences laboratories at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, getting hands-on with microscopy, sample preparation and the science behind how patient samples are processed.

Isaac, aged 10, has undergone multiple medical procedures and still finds blood tests worrying at times. The goal of the visit was to help him feel more comfortable and included in his healthcare by meeting the laboratory staff involved in processing and analysing samples.

Together with his sister Isla, 13, he got stuck into a range of practical activities during the tour. The pair made fake samples, carried out colourful reaction experiment and looked at blood cells under the microscope, where they even spotted a heart-shaped neutrophil while looking for hidden emojis.

Another memorable moment came when their squidgy penguins travelled through the hospital pneumatic tube system before returning from the children’s ward carrying mini cuddly bears.

Gayle, who helped facilitate the tour, said:

We had so much fun and it was great seeing how Isaac now understands all the processes involved in his blood samples’ journey. We hope the tour will help him in any future appointments.

Harvey’s Lab Tours are designed to help children and families better understand the role biomedical science plays in patient care through supportive, engaging visits to hospital laboratories.
