New guidance on anticoagulant dose adjustment
The IBMS has published new guidance to support biomedical scientists involved in anticoagulant services, particularly those managing warfarin dosage under local protocols.
The document explains the legal and professional frameworks that enable biomedical scientists to carry out dose adjustments safely and appropriately. It sets out the key distinctions between prescribing, Patient Group Directions (PGDs), and Patient Specific Directions (PSDs), and provides clarity on training, competence, documentation, and governance requirements.
Developed in response to member queries and service need, the guidance draws on national standards from the HCPC and Specialist Pharmacy Service. It confirms the conditions under which biomedical scientists can contribute to safer, more efficient anticoagulant care - without stepping outside their scope of practice.
