An annual event to celebrate the vital role of biomedical scientists and healthcare laboratory staff
Biomedical Science Day aims to raise public and professional awareness about the critical contributions of biomedical science in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases through laboratory testing and research.
The event involves activities like lab tours, interactive demonstrations, educational workshops, and social media campaigns using hashtags such as #BiomedicalScienceDay and #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare. It showcases the expertise of biomedical scientists, engages communities, and inspires future professionals.
Since it began in 2017, Biomedical Science Day has grown into the largest awareness campaign for our profession, with hundreds of events taking place across the UK and millions of people reached online.
Over the past decade, IBMS members have led the way with creative and engaging activities – from colourful displays and interactive demonstrations to laboratory tours and social media campaigns. Last year alone, more than 320 events were supported through our event packs and funding, reaching audiences across hospitals, schools and communities.

Make the 10th anniversary our biggest celebration yet
The 10th anniversary is the perfect opportunity to take part and showcase the profession. Whether you organise a large public event or a small activity within your laboratory, every contribution helps highlight the impact of biomedical science.
Here are some ideas to get started:
Bring your work to life
Invite colleagues, students or the public into your laboratory – or take your work to them. Lab tours, microscope sessions, simple experiments and interactive exhibits help people see how biomedical science supports diagnosis and patient care.
Connect with your community
Consider hosting a stall in a hospital entrance, community centre or school. Short talks, quizzes and demonstrations are great ways to spark curiosity and start conversations about biomedical science.
Shine online
Social media is a powerful way to amplify your message. Share photos, videos or “day in the life” stories using #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare and #BiomedicalScienceDay2026 to connect with colleagues and reach wider audiences.
Celebrate your team
Biomedical Science Day is also a chance to recognise the people behind the science. Highlight your team, share personal stories and celebrate the different disciplines that make up the profession.
Inspire the future
Use the day to engage with students and early-career scientists. School visits, workshops and career conversations can inspire the next generation to explore biomedical science.
