Swansea patient thanks biomedical scientists for helping save his life

A patient whose life was saved following a severe infection has shared his gratitude for biomedical scientists after meeting members of the profession at Biomedical Science Day.

Anthony Isaac visited the IBMS Biomedical Science Day stand at Singleton Hospital in Swansea with his partner, Suzanne, where they stopped to thank staff and learn more about the vital work taking place behind the scenes in healthcare.

Anthony, who has polycythaemia rubra vera and regularly attends the hospital for treatment, recently experienced a serious health emergency after developing sepsis following a nephrostomy procedure. During a 10-day stay at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, his treatment was complicated by a penicillin allergy.

It was during this time that Anthony and Suzanne first became aware of the critical role microbiology teams play in patient care.

"Until Anthony was in hospital, we knew very little about microbiologists," Suzanne explained. "They had to identify an antibiotic that would save his life – and they did."

Speaking after meeting biomedical scientists at the Biomedical Science Day event, Suzanne said they wanted to personally thank the professionals whose expertise contributed to Anthony's recovery.

"We really have no idea of the detail our routine blood tests go through, and it's people like those we met today who make it happen," she said.

"The staff were genuinely interested in hearing Anthony's story and were pleased to meet a patient whose life had been directly affected by their work."

Anthony was also happy to have his photograph taken with biomedical scientist Joshua Addiscott and trainee biomedical scientist Fflur Thomas-Bowden during the event as a gesture of appreciation for the profession.

In a message shared with the IBMS, Suzanne added: "Your work is invaluable and you really are unsung heroes. Keep up the good work."

For many biomedical scientists, opportunities to meet patients and hear directly about the impact of their work are rare. The encounter was equally meaningful for the laboratory staff who met Anthony and Suzanne.

Lucy Loescher, Senior Biomedical Scientist at Singleton Hospital, who was part of the Biomedical Science Day team, said: "We had a stand in the main entrance of Singleton Hospital all day yesterday and had some lovely interactions with the patients."

Anthony and Suzanne's visit was a particularly memorable moment, giving staff the opportunity to hear first-hand how laboratory science had played a crucial role in Anthony's recovery and reminding everyone involved of the real people behind every sample.

Biomedical Science Day celebrates the essential contribution biomedical scientists make to healthcare, from diagnosing disease and monitoring treatment to supporting life-saving interventions through specialist laboratory services.

Stories like Anthony's are a powerful reminder that behind every sample is a patient, and behind every result is a team of dedicated biomedical scientists helping to change – and save – lives.
