Biomedical scientists, laboratory staff, students and supporters across the UK came together on Thursday 4 June to mark a major milestone, as the profession celebrated the 10th Biomedical Science Day.
From laboratory open days and hospital displays to school visits, careers events and social media campaigns, the profession united to showcase the vital role biomedical scientists play in diagnosing disease, guiding treatment and improving patient care.
Since its launch in 2017, Biomedical Science Day has grown into the largest awareness campaign for the profession, with hundreds of events taking place across the UK each year and millions of people reached online.
This year’s milestone celebrations were among the biggest yet. The IBMS supported activities across the country by distributing more than 350 Biomedical Science Day event packs and approving 46 activity grants worth £18,00, helping members organise events in laboratories, hospitals, universities, schools and communities.
A nationwide celebration
Biomedical Science Day once again demonstrated the creativity, passion and professionalism of biomedical scientists and laboratory staff across every discipline.
Teams welcomed visitors into laboratories, hosted interactive displays, delivered careers talks, organised competitions and shared the science behind diagnosis with patients, colleagues and members of the public.
Across social media, thousands of photographs, videos and messages celebrated the profession using #BiomedicalScienceDay2026 and #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare.
The 10th Biomedical Science Day campaign also continued to inspire the next generation through outreach activities, including the promotion of Scotland’s Classroom Clash: Super Samples – Beat the Clock challenge, designed to introduce school pupils to biomedical science careers.
Harvey’s Lab Tours once again featured prominently throughout the celebrations, giving young visitors behind-the-scenes access to hospital laboratories and helping them understand the science that supports patient care every day.
Support from Parliament
A particular highlight of this year’s celebrations was the strong support shown by Members of Parliament, helping raise awareness of biomedical science and the contribution laboratory professionals make to healthcare across the UK.
MPs publicly supporting Biomedical Science Day 2026 included:
- Dame Chi Onwurah MP
- Emma Lewell MP
- Steve Race MP
- Kirsteen Sullivan MP
- Sam Carling MP
- Kenneth Stevenson MP
- Lauren Sullivan MP
Their messages recognised the expertise, dedication and impact of biomedical scientists and laboratory staff, helping bring the profession to wider audiences and reinforcing its importance within healthcare, diagnostics, public health and research.
Celebrating a decade of impact
This year’s event was not only a celebration of the profession today, but also an opportunity to reflect on how far Biomedical Science Day has come since it launched in 2017.
What began as a profession-led awareness campaign has grown into a nationwide movement that highlights the essential work taking place in laboratories every day.
Over the past 10 events, IBMS members have led thousands of activities, from laboratory tours and community events to school visits, competitions and social media campaigns, helping improve understanding of biomedical science and inspiring future professionals.
Thank you
The IBMS would like to thank every member, laboratory team, employer, university, student and supporter who took part in Biomedical Science Day 2026.
