Biomedical Science Day competitions are back for 2026, giving IBMS members the chance to showcase their creativity, celebrate their teams and share their passion for biomedical science with colleagues across the profession. This year's competitions are open from 1 June to 8 June and feature ten categories designed to recognise everything from public engagement and teamwork to artistic talent and social media creativity.
Whether you're creating a showstopping cake, designing an eye-catching public engagement stand, capturing the perfect laboratory photograph or producing a memorable video, there's a category for everyone. Members can also enter artwork, lab-themed costumes and original biomedical science memes.
The competitions have become one of the highlights of Biomedical Science Day, providing a fantastic opportunity to showcase the ingenuity, enthusiasm and personality that exists throughout our profession.
This year's categories are:
Biomedical Bake-Off
Create a biomedical science-inspired bake such as a cake, cookies, or pies.
Entries will be judged on creativity, presentation, and how clearly the theme is reflected.
Best Biomedical Stand
Create a stand that represents biomedical science.
This could be educational, creative, or interactive, and should clearly communicate a message about the profession or your work.
Photography categories
Best Individual Photo – capture a strong image that reflects biomedical science.
Best Individual Photo with Placard – include a placard to add context or a clear message.
Best Group Photo – showcase teamwork and collaboration.
Best Group Photo with Placard – combine a group image with a clear, visible message.
All photos must be high-resolution JPEG files.
Best Video
Sixty seconds maximum - Submit a short video via a link (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, or Facebook). Your video should bring biomedical science to life.
Suggested themes include:

- What you love about your role,
- What you do in the Lab – your favourite test
- Your career pathway

Keep videos concise, engaging, and no longer than 60 seconds.
Best artwork
Submit original artwork such as paintings, drawings, collages, memes, or microscope slides.
Entries must be your own work. AI-generated artwork will be disqualified.
Best lab-themed costume
Design a costume inspired by biomedical science. This could reflect laboratory work, scientific concepts, equipment, or microscopic elements.
Focus on originality, creativity, and fun!
Best meme
Create an original biomedical science-themed meme. It should be relevant, creative, and appropriate for a professional audience.
One entry per person
Competitions are open only to IBMS members (login required) and submissions will be accepted only through our website.
